Book reading is there to stay

Scarcity of libraries in the city speaks volumes about the pathetic state of affairs of our society and the level of knowledge of the common man. The libraries that are available are in such a sorry state that one doesn’t feel like going and spending the best part of the time there. The ambiance for book reading is simply not there.

News papers are few and scattered here and there without being properly kept. Quality of books available is very low and whatever is available is not catalogued properly and in a scientific manner. This situation really cuts a very figure on the state of affairs of our libraries. To keep the interest alive for the people to come and sit in the libraries and to develop the habit of reading it is very important that  we improve the conditions of our libraries both from the point of view of where they are housed and the quality of books available in them.

Notwithstanding the modern technology available today in the form of internet, by which you have access to all sorts of information that you want; book reading still has its own charm and will not be replaced by the technology gadgets any time soon.

While saying this I don’t want to belittle the importance of internet but one gets the feeling that it is for somebody who wants to get the information in a hurry without delving deep into the subject and trying to get the insight of it.  You sometime get lost with the plethora of information available and lose your track in the middle. The knowledge available is so huge that it dazzles your eyes and it becomes difficult for you to assimilate and to ascertain as to where to begin with.  Instead of taking the subject of your interest in your stride you tend to get overawed by the mere size of it.

Books on the other hand give you a tool by which you can nibble and digest the information at your own pace and enjoy it at the same time. You feel as if you are in charge and in the driving seat and not driven by outside forces beyond your control. You can remain focused on your subject of choice and can read many books on the same subject without bothering to know about other subjects available round the corner.

Reading in the Wilderness

Reading in the Wilderness

$45

Just as twenty-first-century technologies like blogs and wikis have transformed the once private act of reading into a public enterprise, devotional reading experiences in the Middle Ages were dependent upon an oscillation between the solitary and the communal. In Reading in the Wilderness, Jessica Brantley uses tools from both literary criticism and art history to illuminate Additional MS 37049, an illustrated Carthusian miscellany housed in the British Library. This revealing artifact, Brantley argues, closes the gap between group spectatorship and private study in late medieval England. Drawing on the work of W. J. T. Mitchell, Michael Camille, and others working at the image-text crossroads, Reading in the Wilderness addresses the manuscript’s texts and illustrations to examine connections between reading and performance within the solitary monk’s cell and also outside. Brantley reimagines the medieval codex as a site where the meanings of images and words are performed, both publicly and privately, in the act of reading.

Memory's Library

Memory’s Library

$35

“Libraries,” wrote Francis Bacon in 1605, “are as the shrines, where all the reliques of the ancient saints, full of true virtue, and that without delusion or imposture, are preserved, and reposed.” But in Jennifer Summit’s account, libraries are more than inert storehouses of written tradition; they are volatile spaces that actively shaped the meanings and uses of books, reading, and the past. Considering the two-hundred-year period between 1431, which saw the foundation of Duke Humfrey’s famous library, and 1631, when the great antiquarian Sir Robert Cotton died, Memory’s Library revises the history of the modern library by focusing on its origins in medieval and early modern England.Summit argues that the medieval sources that survive in English collections are the product of a Reformation and post-Reformation struggle to redefine the past by redefining the cultural place, function, and identity of libraries. By establishing the intellectual dynamism of English libraries during this crucial period of their development, Memory’s Library demonstrates how much current discussions about the future of libraries can gain by reexamining their past.

The Library at Night

The Library at Night

$15.48

Inspired by the process of creating a library for his fifteenth-century home near the Loire, in France, Alberto Manguel, the acclaimed writer on books and reading, has taken up the subject of libraries. "Libraries," he says, "have always seemed to me pleasantly mad places, and for as long as I can remember I’ve been seduced by their labyrinthine logic." In this personal, deliberately unsystematic, and wide-ranging book, he offers a captivating meditation on the meaning of libraries. Manguel, a guide of irrepressible enthusiasm, conducts a unique library tour that extends from his childhood bookshelves to the "complete" libraries of the Internet, from Ancient Egypt and Greece to the Arab world, from China and Rome to Google. He ponders the doomed library of Alexandria as well as the personal libraries of Charles Dickens, Jorge Luis Borges, and others. He recounts stories of people who have struggled against tyranny to preserve freedom of thought–the Polish librarian who smuggled books to safety as the Nazis began their destruction of Jewish libraries; the Afghani bookseller who kept his store open through decades of unrest. Oral "memory libraries" kept alive by prisoners, libraries of banned books, the imaginary library of Count Dracula, the library of books never written–Manguel illuminates the mysteries of libraries as no other writer could. With scores of wonderful images throughout, "The Library at Night "is a fascinating voyage through Manguel’s mind, memory, and vast knowledge of books and civilizations.

IFLA Library Building Guidelines

IFLA Library Building Guidelines

$104

The information society and the information age are changing library services as well as library premises. This raises questions about what needs to be considered when planning and designing new library buildings in order to achieve attractive, efficient and future-oriented new library spaces. This new publication provides information and guidelines for the building planning process, whether you are planning a new public or academic library building. It reflects on fundamental issues, on new development trends and on the planning process. The library building process is seen from both the library manager's perspective as well as that of the architect and designer. Issues covered include what to consider when investigating the need for space, library design from a marketing viewpoint, green management and sustainability relating to library buildings and a layman's guide to reading plans. This publication and the IFLA guidelines provided are not seen as a traditional set of recommendations to be rigidly adhered to since this would be unrealistic in a fast-changing and global context. Rather, library managers and architects should read them in order to inform their thinking on key issues and establish a planning programme. They must then relate them to their own countries and circumstances by making the relevant local adjustments.

READING ROOM

READING ROOM

$6.78

After the death of his beloved wife, Helen (Lynne Moody), wealthy African-American suburbanite William Campbell (James Earl Jones) finds that Helen has left behind a living will in the form of a videotape. As William watches the video, his late wife urges him to take his huge personal library down to the tough inner-city neighborhood and to establish a reading room. Though confused by this request, William does exactly that, only to find that none of his new neighbors seem inclined to read — not until he posts a sign reading FREE SODA. Ever so slowly, a few regulars trickle into the reading room, among them an idealistic young special-ed teacher (Joanna Cassidy), a high-schooler (Keith Robinson) studying for his SATS, and a little girl (Gabby Soleil) who hopes to get her mother to learn to read. For the most part, however, William’s little sanctuary is the target of break-ins and the hangout for local gang members, and with this in mind it isn’t surprising that several people encourage him to pack up and get out — none more adamantly than the Reverend Rashid Rahim (played by George Stanford Brown, the film’s director), a self-appointed urban activist who perceives in William a threat to his supremacy. Eventually, whether or not William stays or goes boils down to his attempt at redeeming a youthful thief named Javier (Douglas Spain) — and it is at this point in the narrative that William finally understands why Helen wanted him to open up the reading room in the first place. Filmed with the endorsement of the National Center for Family Literacy, The Reading Room was produced for cable’s Hallmark Channel, where it first aired on November 26, 2005. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Beyond the Library of the Future

Beyond the Library of the Future

With insightful comments from a variety of sources-and a generous dose of humor-Shuman builds fictional scenarios that are guaranteed to get librarians thinking, What if…? Eight new scenarios explore such developments as virtual reality, robots, time travel, computer viruses, security, and more-all within the context of the public library (or cybrary, as the author calls it). Written in a conversational tone, the book is intended to stimulate discourse and exploration of issues. Current trends are carefully woven into each scenario as Shuman investigates issues surrounding the library's role in the future. A list of quotations about the future and an extensive bibliography for further reading conclude the work. This book is a sequel to (not a revision of) Shuman's previous work The Library of the Future. Like its predecessor, it is entertaining and thought-provoking-a great read for librarians, library administrators, and students in library school.

Reading Faulkner

Reading Faulkner

Absalom, Absalom! has long been regarded as one of William Faulkner's most difficult, dense, and multilayered novels. It is, on one level, the story of Thomas Sutpen, an enigmatic stranger who came to Jefferson in the early 1830s to wrest his mansion out of the muddy bottoms of the north Mississippi wilderness. He was a man, Faulkner said, "who wanted sons and the sons destroyed him." On another level, the book narrates the tragedy that befalls the entire Sutpen family and that tragedy's legacy that continues well into the twentieth century and beyond. The novel's intricate, demanding prose style, and its haunting dramatization of the South's intricate, demanding history make it a masterpiece of twentieth-century American literature. Reading Faulkner: Absalom, Absalom! offers a close examination and interpretation of the novel. Here difficult words and cultural terms that might prove to be a problem for general readers are explained and keyed to page numbers in the definitive Faulkner text (Library of America and Vintage editions). The authors place Faulkner's novel in its historical context, while also connecting it to his other works.
